SIHAT : Sleep Apnea

Posted by Nabielah Suki , Friday, 19 October 2012 19:33

What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a disorder where breathing sporadically and repeatedly stops and starts while a person sleeps. Because the body may uncontrollably stop breathing, it can be a serious condition. There are three types of sleep apnea:

Central Sleep Apnea

Central sleep apnea occurs when, during sleep, the brain doesn’t send the right messages to the muscles that control breathing.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when throat muscles relax during sleep and prevent air from passing through. This is the most common type of sleep apnea and is most often due to obesity.

Complex Sleep Apnea

This is a combination of the other two types.

Symptoms

A person with sleep apnea might not always be aware of certain symptoms:
  • loud snoring
  • choking
  • abrupt waking
  • shortness of breath
These symptoms may first be recognized by a sleep partner. Symptoms more likely to be known to the patient include:
  • feeling tired after a full night of sleep
  • awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • difficulty staying asleep
  • having a headache in the morning
The Mayo Clinic recommends seeing your doctor if one or more of following is true:
  • you snore loud enough to wake others
  • shortness of breath awakens you
  • your breathing stops during sleep
  • you suffer from daytime drowsiness so severe that you fall asleep during work, watching television, or even while driving

Risk Factors & Treatments

Anyone can have sleep apnea, but certain factors put some at greater risk than others:
  • being male
  • being over the age of 65
  • smoking
  • excessive weight
  • a neck circumference larger than 17 inches
  • a narrowed airway
  • stroke
  • heart attack
  • high blood pressure
  • long periods of sitting
Sleep apnea treatment depends on the severity of the condition. It can include machines that keep airway pressure going while you sleep (continuous positive airway pressure), mouth pieces, surgery, various therapies, weight loss, abstaining from alcohol, and sleeping on your side.

SIHAT: Sleep like a log? Body language of bedtime says everything about you

Posted by Nabielah Suki 19:17

DO you sleep like a log? Or are you more of a yearner, a freefaller or a foetal? The position you choose while sleeping reveals a startling amount about your personality, according to one of the UK’s best known body language experts. Robert Phipps has identified four positions and says the foetal – most favoured by worriers - is far and away the most common. More than half of us (58%) adopt it and sleep with knees up and head down.   The more we curl up, the more comfort we’re seeking, he says in research for the Premier Inn budget hotel chain. It’s a rigid position and can lead to individuals being very stubborn and set in their ways. The second most common position is the log (28%): Straight body, with their arms and legs by their side. This indicates stubbornness. The yearner – arms stretched out in front – is either chasing their dream or being chased (25%). And the freefaller – face down, arms outstretched – feels they have little control over their life (17%). Robert Phipps said: “We all know a good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake for the day ahead.”

1. FOETAL People who sleep like this are returning to their comfort zone to de-stress themselves from the day’s activities. The higher the knees and lower the head the more internal comfort you give yourself. Foetal sleepers are conscientious, ordered and like things in their place but they can over think things and worry unnecessarily. People who sleep like this for the majority of the night can expect a refreshed awakening having dealt with the previous day’s issues compartmentalising and organising while they sleep, allowing them to feel refreshed when they wake and ready to move onward and upward. Foetal sleepers should be careful not to become too stuck in their comfort zone and be prepared to take on new challenges each day.

2. LOG The sleeper in this position fully extends their head, neck, arms, legs and body all stretched out in a straight line. The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking and you can become inflexible which means you make things harder for yourself. Loggers are set in their ways and can be stubborn, liking things done their way, which can make them come across as bossy or even aloof. “Sleep like a log” is the old adage and people who sleep in this straight line can wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep. Try to relax more and let your muscles unwind from the day’s hassles and you’ll wake up feeling more flexible in your thinking. Loggers need to stretch themselves each day to reach new goals and then your day is likely to be more exciting, challenging and fun. You’ll see and feel the benefits in your body and mind as you embrace being a more relaxed you.

3. YEARNER The Yearner has two possible meanings with arms outstretched as though you are chasing your dreams, conversely it can mean you are being chased. You feel you want more from life and are willing to go out there and get it with both hands, ready to capture every new and exciting challenge that comes your way. Yearners are their own worst critics always expecting great results in everything they do, which can mean giving up to quickly with things that don’t go their way right from the off. Yearners wake up eager to face the challenges of the day, seeking out new opportunities. However, take care to make sure what you yearn for is what you really want or you’ll spend a lot of wasted time and energy chasing things that don’t really fulfil you. Yearners should face each new day as a fresh start, reviewing where they are going and what they want from the day, then go for it and see it through with full commitment.

4. FREEFALLER With the whole body outstretched flat on their stomach, arms at right angles, hands gripping the pillow as though holding on for dear life, physically the least comfortable position to sleep for most adults. Freefallers tend to feel like life happens around them and they are just hanging on for the ride, which can make them feel like they’re not in control of what happens. Freefallers can wake up feeling like they still have things leftover from the previous day, which can make them feel over anxious about getting things done today. Freefallers need to take control of each new day and deal with things one step at a time until you are happy to move to the next step. You will then be more motivated and inspired, creating opportunities for you be the boss of your own destiny.
Premier Inn spokesperson, Claire Haigh, said: “Many people read their horoscopes, but we wanted to give our guests a more unique way to look at how their day might turn out by looking at how they sleep.  We have worked with Robert to develop ‘sleep-o-scopes’ and were shocked that the research revealed just how stressed we are as a nation. “It is important we try and wind down after a long day and get a good night’s rest so we wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead.”

Art+Design+Construction :YTL Residence – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Posted by Nabielah Suki , Wednesday, 6 June 2012 01:41

By Agence Jouin Manku (Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku)

Many great, architecturally relevant homes have been designed and built over the centuries, and now the organic design for Kuala Lumpur’s YTL Residence becomes my favorite.

Is this the moment to build a 32,292-square-foot private house...the YTL residence in Kuala Lumpur, completed in 2008 after five years of design and construction, was born of headier times.

The client, Yeoh Seok Hong, wanted to accommodate three generations of his Chinese-Malaysian family, which numbers eleven persons, in a house designed also for business entertaining — named “YTL Residence” for the client’s father, 80-year-old Yeoh Tiong Lay, founder of the YTL Group, a company that specializes in the management of regulated utilities and infrastructural construction projects.

The YTL Residence stands in the residential Daramsara area of the Malaysian capital, where it occupies 95 percent of a hilltop site with a view of the city center and Cesar Pelli’s magnificent 88-story Petronas Towers (1998). Unusual in both size and form, the house marks a significant feat of collaboration that encompasses architecture, engineering, interior design, and landscaping.

Jouin and Manku designed the residence so that the more public spaces for guests—a ballroom, a formal dining room that seats 30 people, a large parking garage, a wine cellar, and a chapel—sit located on the lowest level, separated from the family spaces above:

  • three floors comprising nine bedrooms, living and family areas,
  • Western-style and open-air Chinese kitchens, an outdoor breakfast terrace,
  • a formal library, a game room, and a swimming pool, and
  • a pair of guest suites housed in a semi-detached boomerang-shape wing that’s cantilevered over the hillside.

Sweeping terraces, filled with gardens and shady spots for afternoon tea, surround the residence — especially the main floor for the family that’s also spacious enough to receive guests. This main living level features an impressive 16-foot-high ceiling and a glazed wall facing east toward a stunning view of downtown Kuala Lumpur. Many of the main level’s glass walls slide back to allow cool breezes to enter the interior, though air-conditioning in this hot climate remains a necessity.

The two upper floors contain the nine bedrooms, with one suite for Yeoh Tiong Lay and his wife and a double-height library, and a second suite for Yeoh Seok Hong and his wife, along with bedrooms for the family’s seven children.

On the lowest level, the banqueting and reception areas are equally expansive, as the family entertains on a grand scale:

  • Small weddings take place in a sleek but spare chapel; for bigger nuptials, a wall of glass panels retracts for more guests.

  • The adjoining ballroom can accommodate as many as 200 people for receptions that include a Chinese New Year’s banquet each winter — the stunning ballroom chandelier comprising 13,000 porcelain petals, produced by young French designer Roseline Pailheret and ceramists in her native Limoges, France.
  • The formal dining room seats up to 30 and serves to host elaborate dinners frequented by government and business VIPs.
  • Among these three spaces are 13 bathrooms.

Arriving at the design for this organically shaped house, Jouin states,

“We were searching for a spatial and formal language as dramatic as the landscape itself. While we didn’t want to create a village house or a traditional tropical house, we thought it should be truly based in the particular spatial character of the natural environment.”

The biomorphic shape complicated the structure — a hybrid of reinforced concrete, steel, and wood framing. The lower level of the house is contained within a poured-in-place-concrete base on which the main level sits and the upper levels are balanced. Three concrete core units at particular points—the main entrance, the elevator core, and the kitchen—support the dramatically cantilevered upper volume containing the two bedroom levels.

Jouin conceived the body of the house “as a carapace that protects the private spaces.” A metallic skin wraps around the cantilevered form in a way that gives the house something of an alien presence in the midst of the much less inventive architecture of the neighborhood. Jouin explains, “My work often has a sensual shell, with a good deal of attention focused on the skin.”

Because of the landscaping, the house blends into its natural setting in spite of occupying a vast portion of the site, about 1 acre in size. As the visitor ascends from the automobile entrance to the living and family dining area a floor above, he or she has the impression of being simultaneously outside and inside the house. Integration with the outdoors recalls the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, yet at the same time its openness and its elevation off the ground relates it to certain traditional Malaysian architecture.

YTL house is an original attempt to define a new residential architecture for a tropical climate, if at a scale few will find feasible to emulate. This is the ultimate modern design residence without the bounds of propriety.

The client knew of the French designer Patrick Jouin from stays at the Plaza AthenĂ©e Hotel in Paris, where he and his father admired Jouin’s interiors for the restaurant and bar. Jouin — formerly a designer with icon Philippe Starck’s Paris studio — and his recent partner, Sanjit Manku — a Canadian-trained architect who had previously worked for Yabu Pushelberg — hoped the family would share their commitment to Modern architecture, since Daramsara is filled with all sorts of “neo”-style architecture from around the world.

Car Tunnel To Parking Garage

They found Yeoh and his wife Kathleen were not only enamored of having a Modern house but desired a spectacular one that would demonstrate the construction know-how of the YTL companies.

Even though Jouin and Manku had never designed a house before, the Yeohs were not troubled: The head of architecture for the construction arm of the YTL Group, Baldip Singh, and the chief of its civil engineering department, Lee Hang Meng, would be playing key roles in building the house. Yeoh himself is an engineer who remained closely involved with the structural aspects of the project.

Unlike many Asian cities, Kuala Lumpur still has a great deal of tropical vegetation, which the landscape designer carefully studied—planting both an exterior band of land that surrounds the high walls of the house, the lush inner courtyard at the street level, and the upper, family gardens near the swimming pool.

This is where logic puzzle games are beneficial to brain development in young children and abit late for me..BUT it better than never kn..hahaha..i have a great time doing sudoko puzzle..

there are a few info about SUDOKU...

What is Sudoku?

The most popular of all known number puzzle games that can be described as positively addictive games of logic is Sudoku.
Sudoku or su doku means 'number allotted' or 'the number that is single' in Japanese. It was first featured in a magazine called 'Nikoli' in Japan in the late 1980s, having previously been published in the late 1970s by the New York puzzle magazine 'Math Problems and Logic Puzzles' published by Dell, under the title "Number Place"
A subtly deceptive game, Sudoku surprisingly is easy to learn but highly challenging. Of all number puzzle games, Sudoku is really a 'brain bending' game of numbers and logic. People have been captivated by this game and its easy to get addicted to Sudoku.
Sudoku doesn't require any special math skills or high level calculations abilities. It's really just a simple, captivating and fun game which has a unique solution that can be reached logically without guessing. And all that's needed is brains and concentration.

Benefits Of Playing Number Puzzle Games

Playing number puzzle games has immense benefits to all players because they sharpen the intellect and always offer a challenge to the brain.
Sudoku may have originated from a game called 'Latin Squares' or 'Magic Squares' thought up by the Swiss mathematician, Leonhard Euler. He invented Magic Squares in 1783, which had fewer restrictions than Sudoku with no lines dividing the square.
Identifying symmetrical patterns draws on the addictive nature of the brain, and number puzzle games such as Sudoku offers a challenge to the brain that encourages logical thought processes utilising the short-term memory.
It is thought that this type of puzzle game helps prevent the advance of Alzheimer's and this offers some comfort for short-term illness through its therapeutic thought patterns.

MAKAN : Pavlova lovers

Posted by Nabielah Suki , Sunday, 20 May 2012 04:23

tetibe teringin nk mkn bende alah ni..hemmm...soo ape lg..hanye dihujung jari..googling skit..terjumpe resepi nye..resepi ni dpt dr nigella.com and i also refer to blog table for 2 blog kepunyaan windy.she  are really God of cook... This is a perfect recipe..simple and easy..dan2 je kn..blom try lg..nanti balek kpg bleh try...

For the Pavlova

180gm egg whites (6 egg whites from 6 large eggs)
300gm sugar (don't cut on this, if not the pavlova won't hold)
 3 Tbsp cocoa powder, sifted
 1 Tbsp corn starch
 1 tsp vinegar
 50gm dark chocolate, chopped

1. Preheat oven at 180C. Draw a 9 inch circle on a non stick baking paper. Put drawn side down on a large tray.
 2. Beat egg whites until stiff (pic 2), add in sugar slowly and gradually, and beat until meringue is stiff and shiny (pic3).
 3. Put in sifted cocoa powder and cornstarch. Fold.
 4. Put in vinegar and chopped chocolate and fold.
 5. Mound meringue within drawn circle, smoothing sides and top.
 6. Bake in preheated oven. After you've put the meringue in and oven door is closed, immediately turn down the temperature to 150C.
 7. Bake for 1 hour 30 minutes. (I followed Nigella's instructions to bake for 1 hour 15 mins, and my pavlova is a bit uncooked. Previously I baked the 4 egg portion with this length of time and it was perfect. So, when the amount is increased to 6 eggs, I guess the same length of time will not be sufficient)
 8. When baking time is up. Leave oven door slightly ajar and let pavlova cool in the oven.
 9. Remove from oven when it has fully cooled down.

Topping:

 350ml dairy whipping cream
 3 Tbsp sugar
 1 cup strawberry, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup canned mandarin oranges or tangerines, torn smaller
 3 kiwi fruits, coarsely chopped

Beat dairy cream until soft peaks, put in sugar and beat until stiff. Mound whipped cream onto pavlova and top with chopped mixed fruits.
